Interview with EMS Geotech’s Associate Director Tom Walby

EMS’s Geotech’s Associate Director Tom Walby Bsc Msc FGS AMICE joined the company in 2022 and has been a part of growing our team and expertise.

Tom is a Geo-environmental Scientist and Geotechnical Engineer with twenty years of post-graduate experience as a consultant in the UK and abroad.

Here he explains a bit about what drew him to work for EMS Geotech, what makes us different from the rest and what his long-term goals are for the department.

What drew you to working with EMS Geotech?

My early interest in geology and development was inspired by visits to the Second Severn Crossing, Festival Park in Ebbw Vale and construction of the Cardiff Barrage in the 90’s. At school and sixth form I had the opportunity of work experience placements at a Geotechnical Testing Laboratory in Hereford where I shadowed Jamie, now Owner and Director of Environmental Management Solutions.

In 2000 I was selected by the British Exploring Society to survey the Vatnajökull Glacier and I moved to Cardiff to study Geology. I graduated from Cardiff University with a BSc (Hons) in Geology and specialised with an MSc in Applied Environmental Geology. 2024 marks my 20-year career milestone. My experience has focused on multidisciplinary projects across South Wales and England. I have also learned much through wider international experiences in Alberta, Canada and New South Wales, Australia.

My role at EMS feels like a natural progression of my early goals and relationships. I gain great satisfaction through sustainable projects that will benefit the next generation.

What is EMS Geotech’s USP?

We have dedicated staff that follow each stage of a project, from concept to completion, improving our knowledge and understanding to better support through effective recommendations and advice. EMS Geotech includes experienced and qualified geologists, scientists, and engineers with specialist support from EMS Asbestos and EMS Water. EMS is well prepared for challenging multidisciplinary projects.

What is your aspiration for the department and your own development and how does that fit with making EMS Geotech?

In 2023 EMS Geotech added to its capabilities, extending our support through site preparation and development, providing in-situ strength testing and vibration monitoring to add to our suite of services.

EMS demonstrates commitment to improving standards through continued membership of the Association of Geotechnical & Geo-environmental Specialists. Our staff maintain the standards of their profession through commitment to affiliated Professional Memberships. I am also making progress on my Diploma in Management & Leadership which I should complete this year.
