Desk Study and Ground Investigation for a proposed car park in Gloucestershire

Client: Construction company

A desk study followed by an intrusive ground investigation was required to assess the contaminated land liabilities in relation to the renewal of a large car park.  Information to inform the design of the car park surface was also required.

The desk study found a number of potential contamination sources including former development on the site in the form of a workhouse and later a telephone exchange, and the site’s proximity to railway land.

The intrusive investigation took the form of machine excavated trial pits which allowed the bulk inspection of the soils at the site and a thorough distribution of contamination samples.  California Bearing Ratio (CBR) testing was also carried out utilising EMS’s Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP).

EMS’s investigations revealed that the contamination risk to all receptors was low and provided the CBR testing results to assist in the design of the proposed car park.
